THE ARTIST
Gavi Kaplan has been illustrating since 2018. Born and raised in the neighborhoods of Roslindale, West Roxbury, and Jamaica Plain in Boston, Massachusetts, the artist has resided in New Orleans since 2022. He attended Birmingham-Southern College and graduated in 2017 with a bachelor's degree in political science. The artist has received no formal training in art history or illustration technique.
THE MATERIALS
The artist tends towards Micron pens for all black and white detail. All mat board and illustrastion board are Crescent brands. Sketcbook paper varies. Markers are a mix of Copic (main colors), Touch (grayscale and main colors), and chisel-tipped Chartpak AD markers. Faber Castell Ecco Pigment pens are also occassionally used for thicker black lines.
THE PROCESS
The artist is inspired by witnessing certain subject matter in-person. Reference photos are taken. Live-sketching rarely occurs. The pieces begin in the home studio with either, a rudemntary pencil outline of rectangles, or immediately with pen detail. Pen work can last for weeks, or even months.
THE OUTCOME
The artist's goal is to use surrealistic rendering to explore how the built environment makes us feel. To capture that which is lost in translation between the daydream and the reality. To combine the literal details of a phsyical location, with the feeling each location illicits.
